Sanné Mestrom

Sanné Mestrom was born in Herleen, The Netherlands, in 1979, and arrived in Australia in 1996. She lives in Sydney. Mestrom graduated with Honours from a Bachelor of Fine Art at RMIT University, Melbourne, in 2000, and later completed a PhD in and a Graduate Certificate in Public Art both from RMIT.

Working primarily in sculpture and painting, Mestrom unsettles key notions from art historical canon such as the authentic work, the modernist myth of the male genius, and the flat painting surface, while exploring the complex relations between artist, object, and viewer. She frequently references iconic artworks in order to unpack the cultural, aesthetic and philosophical assumptions they carry. Equally engaged with formal and experiential qualities, in her objects and installations Mestrom defines a complex interplay between visual, conceptual and physical spaces.
