Art @Home with Monash University’s Faculty of Education – Peninsula Campus
In 2020, McClelland and Monash were anticipating the debut of their partnership with the Art-Reach program that would have seen pre-service teachers running programs at McClelland for local kindergarten children in collaboration with gallery educators. With the COVID-19 pandemic forcing the closure of galleries and the cancellation of school excursions, McClelland and Monash reimagined their partnership entirely and took it online.
Working in collaboration with McClelland’s Education and Programs Manager and guided by Dr Geraldine Burke, Lecturer in visual and creative art education at Monash University, students created approachable and engaging arts activities for families, children and teachers, inspired by McClelland’s outdoor sculpture collection. In the words of Dr Burke, 'The activities were designed to encourage playful art-making activities using everyday materials, as well as providing art appreciation activities for families, children and teachers.'
An article How COVID allows educators to creatively connect to the arts was published to outline the methodology and highlight the benefits of the collaboration.
RMIT Studio Partnership
With the gallery and sculpture park closed during the second lockdown in Victoria, McClelland collaborated with RMIT University Media students on the creation of some social media videos as part of exploring the shift to online engagement.
This learning partnership with RMIT is part of McClelland’s current research and development work into online engagement and the distributed gallery space.
Everyone worked remotely - the media studio lead Dr. Seth Keen, the students and the McClelland staff. McClelland provided a creative brief and some video and photo content for the students to post-produce into short video clips. The creative brief focused on the sculpture park Australian bush setting and the core value of providing people with a place to find space and time for contemplation beyond everyday life.
The collaboration was great for the students who like everyone else in Melbourne were confined to their homes. Unable to visit the gallery and sculpture park they worked with staff virtually on getting an understanding of this unique Australian bush environment and the sculpture collection. McClelland staff provided ongoing feedback to the students on the development of the works, which was a great experience for 1st and 2nd year undergraduates.
