John Meade

John Meade’s sculptures range in scale and media. Meticulously constructed, they take the viewer from the real world of materiality on a journey into the metaphysical. The surreal and the erotic are central motifs in his work.

John Meade was born in 1956 in Ballarat and now lives and works in Melbourne. Meade’s Meade He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art (in sculpture) from the Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne, in 1994. He completed a Master of Arts by Research (sculpture) at RMIT University, Melbourne, in 2000 and a Master of Arts (Studio Art), New York University, New York in 2004. In 2018, Meade completed his PhD in Fine Art at Monash University. He lectures at Monash University and the Victorian College of the Arts.

Meade has completed a number of significant pubic commissions. Along with Emily Karanikolopoulos, he was the recipient of the Southern Way McClelland Commission in 2018 for the large-scale public sculpture Love flower.

In 1998, Meade undertook the Asialink residency in India and in 2003 he was the recipient of the Samstag International Visual Arts Scholarship, which enabled him to study the Master of Studio Art program at New York University. His work is held in the collections of the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; Heide Museum of Modern Art, Bulleen, Victoria; Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney; and Monash University Museum of Art, Caulfield, Melbourne.

Meade graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts with a BFA in sculpture. He continued on to complete Honours and a Master of Fine Arts in sculpture from RMIT. In 2004, Meade completed his PHD in Fine Art at Monash University and lectures at both Monash University and the Victorian College of the Arts.

Meade has been awarded a number of significant pubic sculptural commissions including Progeny at the Heide Museum of Modern Art (2006), Aqualung at Victoria harbour, Docklands (2006), Riverside Corolla, Southbank (2011) and in 2020, Asterisk Kolam for ARM Architecture/Monash University Museum of Art commission. Meade, with Emily Karanikolopoulos, was the recipient of the Southern Way McClelland Commission in 2018 for the large-scale public sculpture Love Flower.
