Gregor Kregar

Reflective Lullaby

2015

In Reflective lullaby, 2015, Gregor Kregar presents an enduring motif in his practice, the garden gnome. Kregar reinterprets an object of kitsch and transforms it into a captivating, monumental sculpture. In the Middle Ages, gnomes were considered mystical, philosophical creatures, guardians of the underground and possessors of special powers and knowledge. Kregar draws on this cultural history, his gnomes are monuments to reflection, standing in contemplative positions without tools.

By playing with scale and materiality, Kregar imbues the humorous, everyday figure of the gnome with a new seriousness and gravitas, capturing the ambiguous space between the ridiculous and the sublime.
