Tree of Life

2012

Phil Price’s Tree of life was commissioned as part of the inaugural Southern Way McClelland Commission program in 2010. The ten-metre-high kinetic sculpture is made up of 22 independently moving, elegantly counterbalanced sections animated by the wind. The work references the Eucalyptus, an evergreen that is endemic to south-east Australia. The aerodynamic form and monochrome surface of Tree of life invokes visions of an imagined future characterised by visual features and possibilities of science fiction and technological advancements. Tree of life is an iconic visual feature of McClelland Sculpture Park+Gallery and the wider landscape of the Mornington Peninsula.

McClelland acknowledges the Bunurong / Boon Wurrung people of the South-Eastern Kulin Nation as the Traditional Custodians of the lands and waters on which we are placed.

We are a safe, welcoming space for all people.

As a not-for-profit organisation, McClelland relies largely on the support of visitors through entry fees and donations to help conserve and build the collection, curate inspiring exhibitions and public programs, and care for the beautiful sculpture park and bushland setting for all to enjoy.
