Akio Makigawa
Untitled I (Circle of water II)
1995

Created just four years before Akio Makigawa’s death, Untitled I (Circle of water), 1995, is an exemplar of his late practice – a profound union of form, materiality, and spirituality and deeply informed by Japanese culture. A large, circular floor-based piece, Untitled reflects Makigawa’s abiding interest in the five elements recognised by Zen Buddism – earth, water, fire, wind and space.
