Vale – The Honourable Stephen Charles AO KC

It is with deep sadness that we mark the passing of the Honourable Stephen Charles AO KC, a towering figure in Australian law and public integrity. In 2017, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia for his outstanding service to the law, particularly in commercial arbitration, judicial administration, and legal reform.

Stephen also made a significant contribution to the arts and cultural heritage. In the late 1980s, he served as a Board Member of the Heide Museum of Modern Art. Later, in 2017, he joined the Board of Trustees at McClelland, becoming Chairman from October 2020 to May 2021, and retiring as a trustee in December 2022. His leadership and vision were deeply valued by both the Heide and McClelland communities. His legacy is one of unwavering commitment to justice, democratic integrity, and the rule of law.
