ENCOUNTERS

ENCOUNTERS at McClelland celebrates First Nations’ ancient heritage and gives students an insight into Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture past and present. Students gain first-hand insight into Indigenous knowledge and skills, connected to the Aboriginal seasons of the Kulin Nation. Aboriginal culture varies greatly around all of Australia, especially when it comes to art. ENCOUNTERS is delivered by a highly experienced Indigenous educator.

ENCOUNTERS interweaves knowledge of the practice of ecology and sustainable strategies of Aboriginal people with a particular focus on the local Bunurong / Boon Wurrung environment. The program is grounded in discovering flora, fauna, and culture; reflecting the traditional methods of Aboriginal people and the historical and ongoing traditional custodianship of the land and waters where McClelland is placed.

To enhance your experience of our Encounters Program, we invite you to watch McClelland’s Indigenous Plants Trail. This video introduces five Indigenous plants at McClelland, from an Indigenous perspective. It can be used a pre-visit resource or as follow-up learning.

McClelland acknowledges the Bunurong / Boon Wurrung people of the South-Eastern Kulin Nation as the Traditional Custodians of the lands and waters on which we are placed.

We are a safe, welcoming space for all people.

As a not-for-profit organisation, McClelland relies largely on the support of visitors through entry fees and donations to help conserve and build the collection, curate inspiring exhibitions and public programs, and care for the beautiful sculpture park and bushland setting for all to enjoy.
